Backing the Builders of Tomorrow: Norfab Sponsors Team Gladius

At Norfab, we’ve spent over 30 years crafting metal and building structures that shape Edmonton’s skyline. So when we had the chance to support a group of young people learning to build, engineer, and problem-solve — it was an easy yes.

In late 2025, Norfab proudly became a sponsor of Team Gladius, a local youth robotics team competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge. The FIRST Tech Challenge is a program for students in grades 7–12 that challenges teams to design and build competition robots from the ground up, developing real engineering skills, teamwork, and creative thinking along the way. It currently engages over 109,000 students across 81 countries — and Team Gladius is proudly representing Edmonton in that mix.

Norfab’s support included both a financial contribution and donated materials to help the team bring their robot to life. It’s the kind of hands-on, real-world problem solving we deeply respect — and not so different from what happens on our own shop floor every day.

Studies show that 61% of FIRST alumni go on to declare a major in engineering or computer science — and we’d love nothing more than to see a few future fabricators and engineers come out of Team Gladius. Good luck out there!

Welding, Upgraded: Norfab Adds a THG Automation Robotic Welding Unit to the Team

Our welding team is some of the best in the business — and now they’ve got a robot to back them up. In March 2025, Norfab brought the THG Automation URW-2PA-20-M Collaborative Welding System online, and it’s already making a real difference on the shop floor.

The URW-2PA is built around a Universal Robots cobot arm paired with a Fronius power source, and it’s capable of welding carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Where a skilled human welder typically works around 20 inches per minute, the cobot can push 80–90 IPM handling repetitive, high-volume welds with speed and consistency that’s tough to match over a long shift. It can store up to 1,000 welding jobs and uses touch sensing to detect part variations and automatically adjust weld points, which means reliable results even across varying parts.

By handing those repetitive tasks off to the cobot, our skilled welders are freed up to focus on the complex, detail-oriented work that takes years of experience to master. Our team’s expertise doesn’t get replaced — it gets amplified.

We’re proud of the investment and excited to see the impact it has on both productivity and quality in the months ahead.

Cutting Edge: The Messer Fiberblade V 4020 Laser Cutter Joins the Norfab Fleet

This past September, Norfab hit a major milestone in our production capabilities — the arrival of our Messer Fiberblade V 4020 laser cutter. To say it’s transformed how we work would be an understatement.

Before the Fiberblade, our sheet and plate processing had its limits. Now? We’re processing five times the material per shift compared to before. The 4020 model handles sheets up to 6′ x 12′ and achieves cutting speeds up to 169 metres per minute with positioning accuracy of ±0.03mm — which, in plain terms, means incredibly fast and incredibly precise. It can cut mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass, giving us a versatility we simply didn’t have before.

Watching it work is something else entirely — which is why we’ve got some great arrival footage to share! For Norfab, this is more than a new piece of equipment. It’s a commitment to keeping our clients ahead of the curve.

Bending the Future: Our New Amada HG2204 Press Brake Has Arrived

Big things are happening at our second location — and we mean that literally. In May 2024, Norfab welcomed the Amada HG2204 CNC press brake to our shop floor, and it’s already changing how we work.

For anyone who knows fabrication, you’ll appreciate just how significant this upgrade is. The HG2204 brings our brake capabilities firmly into the modern era — packing 247 tons of bending force with a maximum bend length of over 14 feet. It’s equipped with Amada’s AMNC 3i intelligent control system, delivering high-speed, high-accuracy bending with a 19″ multi-touch interface that’s intuitive enough for operators at any experience level. Whether we’re working on light gauge sheet or heavier structural plate, this machine handles it with precision and repeatability.

For our clients, this means faster turnarounds, tighter tolerances, and the ability to take on more complex bending work than ever before. This is the kind of investment that reflects where Norfab is headed — and we’re excited for what’s next.
